Energy for Displaced People

Sustainable Energy for All (SEforALL) will integrate its Energy for Displaced People agenda into its new programmes instead of continuing it as a stand-alone initiative. This new approach will allow SEforALL to advance this agenda at the country level.

In 2018, there were 70.8 million forcibly displaced people worldwide. With the growing number of displaced people, including refugees, comes the challenge of ensuring they have access to electricity and clean cooking for their well-being and livelihoods. The challenge is compounded by the fact that most displaced people end up in developing regions where energy poverty is already a problem for the local population.

Activities

  • SEforALL will support refugee-hosting governments in the development of inclusive energy policies (as described in our Energy Safety Nets reports), that make specific reference to vulnerable groups, including internally displaced and refugee households.
  • Through our new Policy and Regulatory Framework programme, SEforALL will be ensuring that refugee households and camps are included in country-level, geospatial least-cost electricity planning (tying into UNHCR’s Clean Energy Challenge data platform).
  • SEforALL will continue its involvement in global humanitarian energy coordination mechanisms, building bridges to UN-Energy where appropriate and relevant.

We value the partnerships we have built around Energy for Displaced People, such as the Global Plan of Action for Sustainable Energy Solutions in Situations of Displacement and the Smart Communities Coalition, and look forward to engaging with our partners on these and other topics under our new strategic framework.
