Background

In 2023, the world achieved a significant milestone in energy efficiency through the COP28 Global Renewable and Energy Efficiency Pledge , calling on countries to double the global average annual rate of energy efficiency improvements to over 4% by 2030. While this pledge marks a crucial step forward, the key question remains: how do we get there?

Achieving this target requires a concerted cross-sectoral effort and strategic balance in energy transition initiatives and investments over the coming decade, with a strong emphasis on enhancing energy efficiency in buildings, transport, and industry. Energy efficiency stands as a crucial pillar in the clean energy transitions, fundamental not only for achieving climate goals but also for driving progress across multiple Sustainable Development Goals. Yet, despite well-known socioeconomic benefits, the pace of progress in energy efficiency is lagging.

  • Have we successfully conveyed the full spectrum of benefits to decision-makers across all levels?
  • What elements are lacking in our narrative to enhance the visibility of energy efficiency benefits and catalyze action?
  • How can we enhance collaboration with sectors such as renewable energy, as well as with groups like consumers and youth, to accelerate progress?

Event Overview

Building on insights from previous charrettes in India and Paris, the Portuguese Energy Agency (Adene), Mission Efficiency and the International Copper Association are co-organizing the 2024 charrette. This event will bring together energy efficiency experts, policymakers, civil society organizations, communications specialists, and behaviour experts. We’ll leverage partner resources to shape a collaborative path covering 2024-2025.

The goal is to develop a collective solution that enhances the visibility of energy efficiency, and to design strategies that equip individuals and governments with the tools, knowledge, and resources needed to pursue more ambitious, yet realistic, actions in energy efficiency

What is a Charrette?

A charrette procedure is a collaborative and interdisciplinary problem-solving process aimed at producing a final plan or solution in a short time. By integrating creative strategies, educational and advocacy initiatives, and other resources, this gathering will develop concrete actions, forge partnerships, and identify missing stakeholders. These efforts aim to equip individuals and countries to contribute meaningfully to the goal of doubling energy efficiency this decade.

Setting the scene: What does doubling energy efficiency mean?

Harnessing Collective Efforts: Maximizing Impact Together!

The objective of this session is to present a quick glance at current initiatives and resources to maximize their impact and avoid duplication. Projects presented and other partner resources will be compiled and accessible on the Mission Efficiency website.

Format: 5-min pitches (+5min Q&A)

Success stories from Climate and Energy Efficiency Narratives

Breakout session: Empowering individuals and countries with energy efficiency

Participants will split into groups, each focused on a specific target audience (youth & individuals, businesses, and policy makers), to brainstorm an impactful strategy to equip individuals and countries with knowledge, tools, data and other resources that need to advocate for energy efficiency and take ambitious energy efficiency action.

Key points to be discussed :

  • Leverage key events and strategic collaborations (for example G20, COP, etc.)
  • Identify strategic partnerships and synergies among participant organizations.
