Africa Carbon Markets Initiative (ACMI)

Scaling voluntary carbon markets across Africa

The Africa Carbon Markets Initiative (ACMI) is a collaborative effort supported by a coalition of organizations committed to expanding African carbon markets as a catalyst for green development, job creation, prosperity, and equality for the benefit of both people and the planet.

What We Do

ACMI supports African governments, communities, project developers, and other stakeholders within the African carbon market ecosystem to scale the supply of and demand for high-integrity African-sourced carbon credits. We work across both voluntary and compliance carbon markets, including Article 6 mechanisms under the Paris Agreement, to create a comprehensive and robust carbon market ecosystem. Our efforts include developing country-specific roadmaps that outline action programs to engage the entirety of the carbon market ecosystem, from on-the-ground project developers and communities to buyers, intermediaries, and financiers.

How we do it

Our approach is rooted in integrity, transparency, and equity. We collaborate with leading bodies to set high standards for carbon credit suppliers, intermediaries, and buyers, ensuring that carbon markets in Africa scale with meaningful climate and development impacts.

ACMI’s impact to date

ACMI has already supported the Kenyan government in launching their carbon market activation plan. We are now working with an additional three African countries to develop and implement country-specific carbon market activation plans, with 12 more committed to joining. More widely, we are working towards making Africa an investor-friendly destination for carbon markets, ensuring high integrity and significant benefit- sharing with local communities.

Carbon Markets 101 video series

ACMI has developed a three-part video series: ‘Carbon Markets 101’. The series intends to break down what carbon markets are and how they fundamentally work, their potential within the African continent to support sustainable energy transitions and other co-benefits, and the future of African carbon markets. The series includes success stories from the continent and interview footage from industry experts.

By prioritizing integrity, transparency, and equity, African carbon markets can become a vital source of financing for clean energy and sustainable development, benefiting local communities and fostering long-term environmental stewardship.

Governments, businesses, and communities must collaborate to maximize the benefits, ensuring that carbon credits genuinely support both climate goals and sustainable development across the continent.

Past webinars

ACMI regularly engages with wider audiences through webinars with partners, including the Voluntary Carbon Markets Integrity Initiative, the Integrity Council for Voluntary Carbon Markets, the International Emissions Trading Association, and the United Nations Development Programme to bring greater clarity to the ecosystem on what needs to be done.
