Unique Partnership

“Energy is the golden thread that connects economic growth, increased social equity and an environment that allows the world to thrive.”

UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon

“Ending poverty and ensuring sustainability are the defining challenges of our time. Energy is central to both.”

Jim Yong Kim - World Bank Group President

The world faces two major challenges; providing the “energy poor” with access to clean, reliable, affordable and modern energy services in the developing nations and making improvements in energy efficiency and in the use of renewables in the industrialized world.

Cognizant that providing global energy access to sustainable energy is a necessity that will help to lift millions out of poverty while at the same time make progress on preventing dangerous climate change, United Nations Secretary-General, Mr. Ban Ki-moon invited World Bank Group President, Dr. Jim Yong Kim, to serve with him as co-chair of the advisory board.

This unique partnership, the first in the history of both institutions, has afforded the World Bank President and the UN Secretary General to come together to co-chair a high-level group comprising of governments, civil society, and business leaders from around the world geared towards transforming the world’s current energy system  which is inequitable and unsustainable.

For both men and their institutions, the close collaboration underscores one thing they have in common; their strong belief that sustainable development must be pursued as a top priority for their administrations. It also highlights the importance of the initiative in forging successful multi-stakeholder partnerships in meeting our shared global challenge of creating an energy revolution; providing access and encouraging the use of cleaner sources of energy, including renewable energy and energy efficiency,

Sustainable Energy for All seeks to meet three ambitious and achievable objectives: providing universal access to modern energy services, doubling the global rate of improvement in energy efficiency and doubling the share of renewable energy in the global energy mix.

Besides offering strategic advice to the work of the initiative, Mr. Kim’s participation, will allow the World Bank Group to step up its actions in partnership with governments, the private sector and civil society, mobilizing its financing, policy expertise and convening power to achieve these goals of access and improvements in energy efficiency and the use of renewables.
