UNDP powering change: clean energy benefits women's and children's health
This is the UN Decade on Sustainable Energy for All, and the first two years are dedicated to the links between energy, women, children and health. Each year, 4.3 million premature deaths, mainly women and children, are linked to toxic fumes from fuels such as wood, animal waste and charcoal used for cooking and heating. The United Nations Development Programme shows how bringing clean energy to communities across the Asia-Pacific region is helping to safeguard women's and children's health, as well as freeing them from the burden of hours spent fetching fuel.
