Republic of Vanuatu takes bold step towards sustainable future by joining 24/7 Carbon-Free Energy Compact
Sustainable Energy for All (SEforALL) is delighted to announce that the Republic of Vanuatu, Ministry of Climate Change has officially joined the 24/7 Carbon-Free Energy Compact.
This significant milestone highlights Vanuatu's dedication to the global fight against climate change and the transition to a sustainable, clean energy future. As a new signatory, Vanuatu joins the governments of Iceland and Scotland and more than a hundred other signatories who have committed to having their electricity consumption come from carbon-free energy sources, every hour of every day.
Vanuatu's Ministry of Climate Change Adaptation, Meteorology and Geo-Hazards, Energy, Environment and National Disaster Management was created in 2014. The 24/7 Carbon-Free Energy (24/7 CFE) Compact commitment complements the recently submitted enhanced Nationally Determined Contribution by Vanuatu, covering over 20 sectoral policies and contains 20 mitigation commitments, 116 adaptation commitments and 12 loss and damage commitments.
The 24/7 CFE Compact is an ambitious global effort to accelerate the decarbonization of the world’s electricity systems to mitigate climate change and ensure access to clean and affordable electricity for all, in line with Sustainable Development Goal 7 (SDG7).
It works as a one-stop coalition that advocates for policy change and policy reform and inspires and enables its partners to meet their total electricity demand with carbon-free resources - every hour, every day, everywhere. Launched during the High-Level Dialogue on Energy, held by UN-Energy, in September 2021, the compact is now 118 signatories strong and counting, working together to make carbon-free energy a reality.
Founding signatories to the 24/7 CFE Compact included AES Corporation, EDP, Google, Microsoft, Eurelectric, the government of Iceland, Orsted, Statkraft and the US cities of Des Moines and Ithaca. The Republic of Vanuatu joins additional governments, academic institutions, and private sector companies to become a part of an unparalleled global community of stakeholders, energy leaders and entities, committed to support the decarbonization of electricity systems worldwide.
