The Third International Conference on Financing for Development

The Third International Conference on Financing for Development will take place in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia from 13 – 16 July 2015. It will gather high-level political representatives, including Heads of State and Government, and Ministers of Finance, Foreign Affairs and Development Cooperation, as well as all relevant institutional stakeholders, non-governmental organizations and business sector entities. The Conference will result in an inter-governmentally negotiated and agreed outcome, which should constitute an important contribution to and support the implementation of the post-2015 development agenda. The conference’s success is seen as essential for the success of the post-2015 development agenda, including Sustainable Development Goals, as well as the UN Climate Change Conference later this year. With energy as one of the proposed Sustainable Development Goals (SDG7), the next question is how to finance its achievement. SEforALL has established that to finance all its three objectives on energy efficiency, access and renewables – objectives very similar to the proposed targets for SDG7 – current financing needs to double. The good news: Resources committed to SEforALL already makes it possible to halve energy poverty by 2030. Further, a sub-committee under the SEforALL Advisory Board has identified four instruments with a potential to catalyze $120 billion of incremental annual investment by 2020.
