SEforALL at UNGA79
An SEforALL delegation, led by the CEO/UN Special Representative of the Secretary-General for Sustainable Energy for All, will participate in a range of activities during UNGA79, which takes place alongside Climate Week NYC, from 23-27 September.
We will celebrate and showcase ambition, engage the right partners to leverage innovative financing solutions to bridge the energy access gap, and amplify the call to action on Mission 300 and Energy Compacts.
In 2022, for the first time in over a decade, the number of people without electricity increased, rising to 685.2 million.
In response, the World Bank Group and African Development Bank announced a bold partnership to bring electricity to 300 million people in Sub-Saharan Africa by 2030. This effort, dubbed Mission 300, underscores the urgent need for targeted investments in scalable energy solutions.
Simultaneously, the Brazilian Presidency of the G20 is leading efforts to establish voluntary principles for a just and equitable energy transition, encouraging governments and non-state actors to turn these principles into tangible action. The principles will be captured in the G20 Just Energy Transition Compact, which is led by Brazil and the G20, marking a critical step toward a sustainable, inclusive energy transition.
Together with its partners, SEforALL will also showcase progress on the Energy Compacts – voluntary, trackable commitments designed to spur action towards achieving net-zero while advancing universal energy access – through a series of dedicated sessions planned during the SDG7 Action Forum hosted by UN-Energy on 25-27 September.
