Sustainable Energy for All at the 24th Conference of the Parties (COP24)

A delegation from SEforALL will be present at COP24 to support a focus on the critical path of an energy transition that can serve all with reliable, affordable and clean energy – key linchpins of achieving Sustainable Development Goal 7 (SDG7) and the Paris Climate Agreement.

SEforALL will host a formal COP side-event on Tuesday, 11 December, to highlight the latest findings from our newly released Energizing Finance: Understanding the Landscape report. The report tracks finance for electricity and clean cooking access in countries with the largest access gaps and offers key insights and recommendations to support governments and development finance institutions boost finance levels to help meet SDG7.

Rachel Kyte, our CEO and Special Representative to the UN Secretary-General for Sustainable Energy (SRSG), will be engaged in the energy-related dialogues and participating in a number of key events during COP24 as will other members of the SEforALL leadership team.

 

SEforALL ORGANIZED OFFICIAL SIDE EVENT

ENERGIZING FINANCE: UNDERSTANDING THE LANDSCAPE 2018

Our side event will feature a presentation of key findings from Energizing Finance: Understanding the Landscape 2018, the latest report arising from Sustainable Energy for All’s (SEforALL) groundbreaking research partnership with Climate Policy Initiative (CPI). The report provides first-of-a-kind, systematic analysis of finance flows into two key areas of energy access, electricity and clean cooking, in 20 countries in sub-Saharan Africa and Asia with the world’s largest energy access deficits.

The panel will examine: the role of different financial institutions in funding the energy transition; conducive government policy settings; the paradigm shift required to close the clean cooking access gap; efforts to boost investment in off-grid energy solutions; and innovative financial instruments and structures.

Rachel Kyte, SEforALL CEO and Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General, will provide opening remarks, which will be followed by a presentation of the report's key findings. SEforALL will then engage a panel of leading global financiers and policymakers at the forefront of innovation in a discussion of the policies, institutions and financial instruments necessary to spur the global energy transition and meet Sustainable Development Goal 7 (SDG7) targets by 2030.

OTHER SEforALL ENGAGEMENT:

ACTION EVENT ON ENERGY: “ENABLING CHANGE THROUGH ENERGY TRANSITION.”

SEforALL is a collaborator in the organization of this three-hour energy session, which is part of the Marrakech Partnership for Global Climate Action. It will feature sessions on long-term planning and innovation in the global energy transition and bring together policy makers, corporate leaders, innovators and other energy stakeholders for discussions focused on action to accelerate progress in the sector to meet global goals.

Event will be held in GCA area on Saturday, 8 December, 10:00 – 13:00.

 

SUSTAINABLE INNOVATION FORUM 2018

On Monday, 10 December CEO and SRSG Rachel Kyte will provide the opening keynote address for day two of the 9th annual Sustainable Innovation Forum. The Forum will feature high level policy discussions and keynote speeches by ministers, city leaders, investors and other stakeholders.

Event will be held in Vienna House on Sunday, 9 December – Monday, 10 December.

 

LOW CARBON COOLING: SCALING-UP INNOVATION, FINANCE AND DEPLOYMENT

The UK Government’s Department for Business, Energy & Industrial Strategy (BEIS), in cooperation with the University of Birmingham, will hold a side event on the urgency for scaling up innovation, finance and deployment of low carbon cooling technologies. An SEforALL senior representative will participate in the panel discussion and share findings and insight from our Cooling for All work.

Event will be held in UK Pavilion on Wednesday, 12 December, 14:30 – 16:00.

 

UN ENVIRONMENT SIDE EVENT: “COOLING-OFF WITHOUT COOKING THE PLANET.”

This high-level panel on cooling will highlight the need for, and showcase progress on, adopting more energy efficient and climate-friendly refrigeration and air conditioners. An SEforALL senior representative is also expected to participate in this event.

Event will be held on Wednesday, Wednesday, 12 December, 18:30 – 20:00, Room TBD.
